scopophobia
It's a real word, I looked it up: fear of being in front of the camera.
I think we all have this to some extent. We want to come across as our true selves and not have a stiff smile for our picture. Here are my tips for having a better experience having your picture taken.
Hire an Experienced Photographer
I'm sure a selfie or a friend with a camera can work sometimes, but to have quality, you're going to have to pay for it. Feeling at ease starts with working with a photographer you trust. Look at portfolios, read reviews, and have a conversation before booking. A great photographer will guide you, help you pose naturally, and make the experience enjoyable. At Michelle Deppe Photography, I strive to create a relaxed atmosphere so you can be yourself and love your photos.

Wear Something You Feel Great In
Clothing plays a big role in how confident you feel in front of the camera. Choose outfits that fit well, flatter your body type, and align with the mood of the session. Avoid anything too tight, too loose, or uncomfortable. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best to keep the focus on your face. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel like YOU!
Practice Posing in the Mirror
It might feel silly, but practicing in front of a mirror helps! Try different expressions, angles, and postures to see what feels natural. Tilt your chin slightly, relax your shoulders, and find your best side. This way, when you’re in front of the camera, you’ll already have a sense of what works for you.
Use Props or Movement
If standing still and posing feels awkward, use props or small movements to make your photos look more natural. Hold a coffee cup, run your fingers through your hair, or adjust your jacket. Walking, twirling, or interacting with your surroundings can create a dynamic, candid feel that looks effortless and genuine.
Focus on Your Breath
Deep breathing can help calm nerves. Before the camera clicks, take a deep breath in and slowly exhale. This will help release tension in your face and body. Relaxed facial expressions look more natural and inviting.
Think of Someone You Love
A great trick to get a genuine smile is to think about a person or a happy memory that makes you feel warm inside. This will bring out a natural, heartfelt expression rather than a forced smile.
Trust the Photographer’s Guidance
A professional photographer knows how to pose you in the most flattering way. Trust their direction, whether it’s adjusting your posture, shifting your weight, or tilting your head. They see what works best on camera and will help you look your best.
Laugh It Off
Sometimes, the best photos come from unexpected moments. If you feel awkward, embrace it! Laughing at yourself can ease tension and create beautiful, candid shots. Some of the most memorable photos are the ones where you’re genuinely having fun.
Get Comfortable With Your Face
Many people feel uncomfortable simply because they aren’t used to seeing themselves in photos. Spend some time getting familiar with your expressions and angles by taking selfies or recording short videos. The more you see yourself, the more natural it will feel when it’s time for your professional shoot.
Prepare Ahead of Time
Preparation can eliminate stress. Get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated, and eat a light meal before your session. Plan your outfit, know the location, and give yourself plenty of time to get ready. Feeling rushed or unprepared can make you more anxious in front of the camera.
Play Music or Bring a Friend
Music can help set a relaxed mood, so don’t hesitate to ask your photographer if they can play your favorite tunes. If you’re more comfortable with a friend or family member present, bring them along for encouragement and some behind-the-scenes fun.
Remember: It’s Not About Perfection
Perfection isn’t the goal—authenticity is! The best photos capture who you truly are. Embrace your natural expressions, let go of self-criticism, and focus on enjoying the moment. When you feel good, it will shine through in your photos.
Being in front of the camera doesn’t have to be stressful. By choosing the right photographer, preparing in advance, and using simple techniques to relax, you can make the experience enjoyable and capture photos that reflect the best version of yourself.
