Senior photos in Davis County and Salt Lake City, Utah
I often get asked, "When is a good time to have senior pictures?" I’ve had three of my kids graduate high school so believe me when I say that anytime but May is a good time. May has AP testing, concerts, dances, and so many school events. If your high school graduation is at the end of May or early June I'd recommend getting them done at least 6-8 weeks before you need graduation announcements. If you schedule a shoot the first week of May I need 2 weeks to edit and upload the photos to an online gallery. If you order announcements through me I can get them in 2 days. If you order through Costco or Snapfish plan on a couple of weeks. It's better to plan ahead and have the photo shoot early enough to send out graduation announcements.
Spring in Northern Utah
Spring is a great season for senior photos. There are tulips and wild flowers and new green blooming this time of year. March and April are ideal to have senior photos taken in the spring. Usually the weather is more comfortable so you can wear just about anything. One favorite place in Salt Lake City, Utah is at the capitol building with the cherry blossoms. There are also peach orchards with beautiful blossoms and flowering pear trees in early spring.
Summer in Northern Utah
Summers can be really warm in August but early June before your senior year is a beautiful time to have senior photos taken. The days are getting longer and there is more sunshine outside. Another advantage of summer photos is you don't have school commitments like sports, music, or other school clubs that meet during the school year. One downside is there are more bugs around. Mosquitoes and gnats can be a problem in the summer at Antelope Island and the Great Shoreline Preserves in Layton. Of course bug spray works and it's not usually a big deal.
Fall photos in Northern Utah
Fall is a popular time for photos. September and October are my busiest time of year with family photos and portraits with the fall colors. It can be harder to schedule your shoot during the fall so plan ahead and book early. In the mountains beautiful yellows, reds, and oranges are a beautiful backdrop for you senior photos. The days are shorter and by November it can be 20 degrees outside so for outdoor photos don't wait until November. It usually snows here also.
Senior Studio Session in Kaysville, Utah
Another option I have is indoor in my home studio. The light is predictable and when I shoot is more flexible. You don’t have to worry about the weather at all. (Well, maybe if there is a blizzard outside and you can’t come to the studio.) But overall it’s a great option. You can have a professional headshot done also. At the studio we can do sitting, standing, and laying down photos. I have a small studio but for one person it’s plenty of room. I can fit about 6 people in the studio.
Celebrate being a senior!
So there are my suggestion for when you can plan to have your senior portraits done. College graduation is also an amazing milestone you want to commemorate with photos. My daughter graduated Weber with her associates degree in 2020 and I’m so glad we could have photos of her. My son also graduated in 2021 from Davis Tech and I took some photos of him there. His grandfather was there and he passed away months later so I’m so glad I took photos of my son with his grandparents that day.
