Tips for your studio headshot with Michelle Deppe Photography | Kaysville Utah
Your headshot is your first impression—let’s make it count! Here’s what to wear for a professional, polished look that reflects your personality and brand.
1. Keep It Classic & Timeless
Choose solid colors and simple patterns that won’t go out of style. Neutral tones like navy, gray, black, white, or earth tones work well. Avoid loud patterns, logos, or trendy designs that may become outdated quickly.
2. Wear Colors That Complement Your Skin Tone
Pick shades that highlight your features. Neutral colors, solids, jewel tones (emerald green, burgundy, cobalt blue) and soft pastels often work well for most skin tones. Avoid neon colors or anything overly bright that can cast reflections on your skin. The key is to wear something you feel confident in and that you love. Avoid logos and busy patterns.
3. Layering Adds Depth
A blazer, jacket, or cardigan can create a polished, professional look while adding depth to your image. For a more casual style, a fitted sweater or stylish blouse can work well. It depends on the look you are going for.
4. Stick to Simple, Well-Fitting Clothing
Your clothes should fit well and make you feel confident. Avoid anything too tight, too loose, or overly busy. A tailored fit always looks more professional in photos. Choose clean, smooth necklines like v-necks or rounded necklines for menswear, and nicely fitted, straight sitting necklines for women. Always iron your clothes also.
5. Avoid Distracting Accessories
Keep jewelry minimal and avoid anything that will take the focus away from your face. Small earrings or a delicate necklace work well. If you wear glasses, make sure they are glare-free. I can work with you to make sure we don't have a glare.
6. Grooming Matters
Make sure your hair is neatly styled, and if you wear makeup, go for a natural, matte look. Avoid overly heavy or shimmery makeup. If you’re due for a haircut or trim, plan it a few days before your session.
7. Think About Your Brand & Industry
Are you a corporate professional? A solid blazer and button-up may be ideal. A creative entrepreneur? A stylish, modern outfit with personality might work better. Think about how you want to present yourself.
8. Bring a Backup Outfit
It’s always a good idea to bring an extra top or jacket in case you want to switch up your look. Having options ensures you get a variety of images to choose from. Please bring 2-3 options. I have black, grey, beige, and white backgrounds. It's best not to wear black on black or white on white for your headshot.
9. Confidence is Key!
The most important thing you can wear is confidence. Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and like your best self. When you feel good, it shows in your photos!
