What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

I love fall. Fall is a perfect time for family photos. The weather is cool, the trees are full of color, and you can layer clothes to keep warm. In Northern Utah we can have all 4 seasons and it's great, isn't it?

As a mom I know it can be hard to know what to have everyone wear for your family photos. I recommend finding things you and your kids already have for photos. Once I ordered 3 new dresses for photos and I ended up wearing one that was "old" but comfortable and simple. So, you don't have to find all new matching outfits. I'm a believer in less is more.

Here are some ideas for your photo session

Coordinate, Don't Clone

  • Coordinate your clothes, don't all wear the same color.
  • Pick clothes out that you love and colors that look good with your skin tone.
  • Pick out warm, autumnal colors like deep reds, rich oranges, earthy browns, and olive greens. These hues complement the fall foliage.
  • You can choose some neutral tones such as cream, beige, or gray to balance the color palette.

Wear Layers

  • Fall weather in Utah can be quite unpredictable, so layering is key. Start with a basic outfit and add layers like cardigans, scarves, or vests that can be easily removed if it gets warm.
  • Layering also adds depth and visual interest to your photos. Different textures work well.
  • You can use textures like tweed, wool, corduroy, or knit sweaters into your outfits. These fabrics not only keep you warm but also add dimension to your photos.
  • Avoid overly shiny or reflective materials since they can create glare in your photos.

Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns

  • Steer clear of clothing with large logos or busy patterns that may distract from the family's faces in the photos.
  • Avoid fluorescent and bright colors.
  • One person could have a print and the others can match the colors.
  • Subtle patterns like plaid or small prints can work well if not overdone.

Prepare Your Outfits

  • Try on your outfits as a family before the day of the photoshoot to make sure everything fits well and goes together. Iron shirts and pants.
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared with extra layers.
  • Bring a coat to wear between shots if it's really cold outside.

Think about the Location

  • Think about the colors of where you will be having photos taken. If it's really yellow in the field, don't wear yellow.
  • If you'll be surrounded by colorful fall leaves, choose colors that contrast or complement the scenery.
  • If the background is more brown or earthy, bolder colors can make your family stand out. Or you can wear more beige to contrast the browns in the background.

Accessorize

  • Accessories like scarves, hats, and boots can add a stylish touch to your outfits.
  • Don't forget about jewelry and belts, but keep them small to avoid overshadowing your faces.

Dress for Comfort

  • Make sure that everyone is dressed comfortably, this is the MOST important point.
  • Wear shoes you can walk in and stand for a while wearing. You can choose boots or closed-toe shoes and plan to walk through weeds and uneven areas.

Memories Matter Most

I'm a relaxed photographer and want the session to be relaxed and fun for your family. I know it can be stressful as a mom to get your kids ready and they most likely don't really want to have photos taken. (teens especially) Remind your family why this is important to you and have a reward, something planned after the shoot. Don't come to the session hungry or Thursday. I've had too many people say they'll go to dinner after the shoot and then they are hangry, seriously. Eat well before you come, bring snacks and water for the kids, Get ice cream or something for afterward. Your family matters and you want to record this moment and have a fun memory.

Remember, it's not just about the outfits; it's about the moments you're capturing. So, relax, have fun, and get ready to create memories that'll last a lifetime. Fall in Utah is a beautiful time, and your family photos will show that beauty!
