Baby Photos

Having a baby changes everything. It changed how I looked, how I felt, how much energy I had…everything. You will never be the same. Since it’s such a life changing event you’ll want to remember all the little things about your baby.

As you deal with the sleepless nights and endless diaper changes, you may be wondering when you should schedule a photoshoot to capture those precious first moments. But when is your baby no longer considered a "newborn," and does it even matter? Let's look at when it’s a good time to have those newborn baby photos.

You might want to have some taken at the hospital, but if you’re like me you will be in the hospital gown the whole time dealing with IV drips and meds. I had a c-section every time and never got dressed. I could barely get out of bed. It’s really painful. This was not the best time for me to be in photos. Of course it’s a great time to take the fresh 48 photos, when it’s the first 2 days of the baby’s life. I’m glad my husband took some photos in the hospital because I was on morphine and heavy drugs the whole time. I remember being happy and tired and in pain. So for me I loved being at home and in my own clothes.an come back at any time to make more changes.

The Newborn Phase

The pediatricians say the newborn phase lasts the first 2-3 months of life. But for newborn photography the ideal time for a shoot is the first 14 days after birth. I tell people 1-2 weeks is the best time for your newborn photos. The baby will sleep more and the baby acne hasn’t hit.

It might be a hard adjustment for your other kids and partner 2 weeks after the baby is born, but the infant is tiny and new. You won't ever get back this special time.

Photos after 2 weeks

If you don’t have photos taken before 2 weeks the babies are still tiny and it’s definitely not too late to take newborn photos. The new mom might feel better after 4-6 weeks (like me). I could finally walk more than a block and carry things after a month after surgery.

The baby will be more alert after a month old and might even smile at the camera. Personality and expressions might be more at 2-3 months old. So you can have a fun baby shoot at this stage also.

Capture the baby moments

Capture the baby's beginning

In the end, it’s most important to document your precious baby as she grows up. You’ll want to have baby photos on the wall of how she used to be and also be in the photos. I wish I had more photos with me and my babies. I was always taking lots of photos, so I’m not in enough of them.

The focus is on your family and how much love you have for each other. You want to show the joy and chaos of this new beginning in your life. These photos will become priceless as time goes on. Your little toddler will love to see what they looked like as a baby. It shows a connection of the parents with the baby if you are all included in the newborn photos. These are treasured memories.
